Get Informed Before You Buy A Mattress

Sleep quality is often something that people don’t think much about. We all assume that as long as we don’t have chronic insomnia or wake up without being able to fall back to sleep a good quality of sleep. The truth is that many more people than you may imagine are sleep deprived. If you wake up after a full night’s sleep and are still tired or can’t get through a full day without getting tired, you’re probably one of them.

If you have a traditional mattress, often called an Innerspring Mattress, you may not realize how much you toss and turn all night because it’s probably the way you’ve been sleeping your entire life. You sleep for a bit, then wake up. You roll over, change positions, maybe adjust your pillow and go back to sleep. If you have a sleep partner, your sleep partner does the same thing a few times a night as well, waking you up a bit each time. Between the two of you, you could both be waking up six, eight or even ten times a night.

It used to be that an innerspring mattress was the height of sleep technology. In the late 1800’s when the innerspring mattress began to gain popularity among the wealthy, most people were still stuffing handmade mattresses with cotton, straw or feathers, which had to be changed out and remade on a regular basis. Innerspring mattresses became popular very quickly. They provided a predictable sleep surface that didn’t need to be tended to or refilled. Once you purchased it, you didn’t need to think about it again for years. It was truly a cutting edge product and a huge improvement to the handmade mattresses that had been used for hundreds of years.

In the 20th century, even though the innerspring mattress was still the mattress of choice, there was obviously room for improvement, resulting in a variety of different mattresses being invented and reaching some level of popularity. These mattresses all were trying to create a variable sleep surface, but had mixed results. Waterbeds, air beds and foam rubber mattresses all gained some popularity, only to fall out of favor because they didn’t hold up to long-term use, were frustrating or difficult to maintain, or caused increased sleep partner disturbance.

In the new millennium, new mattress technology has created a level of increased quality that hasn’t been seen since the leap from handmade mattresses to innerspring mattresses over a hundred years ago. Modern mattresses no longer need innersprings or underlying box springs for support, but have support built in by the use of technologically advanced cellular materials. These modern materials can also be manufactured with different levels of firmness from head to toe, giving the perfect amount of support to each part of your body.

If you are interested in upgrading your traditional innerspring mattress to one of these newer models of mattresses, there are a couple of different ways that you can obtain them. Most of these alternate mattress types are sold in the same venues as traditional innerspring mattresses, making it easier to compare the different features of each before purchasing. Individuals may also choose to order their new mattress, either by the phone number listed in the mattress company’s brochure or online via the company’s website.
