“imploded” design — the corbusier chair
I like to say that the corbusier chair is a great illustration of the “imploded” design approach in home furniture. By imploded I mean that certain design elements which are traditionally internal — inside of the furniture piece itself and cannot be seen — are brought to the outside. The corbusier was revolutionary in that way — the internal framing structure of a chair which was typically never seen but covered over by fabrics, cushions, etc. was brought to the outside and actually incorporated into the overall appearance of the furniture piece. In traditional furniture pieces the framing structure exists solely to provide support and strength — but with the corbusier, it is a critical part of its appearance, as well.
