Tropical Living in the Philippines

The Philippines has the distinction of being a tropical archipelago in the world, living in a tropical country gives you a promise of a breezy tropical scene and there is always a new beach, blue skies, warm waves. Every beach bum’s dream is here.

Filipino house designs reflect the culture and lifestyle of every Filipino family and the environment such as the sea and the forest, in many cases Filipino houses are more traditional than contemporary. With the beautiful scenery outside almost all Filipino houses has a permanent feature, the lanai, a type veranda that has wide eaves to shelter the interior from the sun, but is open to the outdoors for the dwellers to enjoy the cool breeze, it acts as the alternative to the more formal dining and living room. It is the place to lounge in, to relax in to take the scents of tropical garden. Filipinos even when in the same country chooses to own rest houses in the province to experience once again the serenity of rural life and escape the hustles of the city, it is family tradition for the Filipinos to go home to the province during summer to be with relatives and friends and enjoy the antique houses they have left behind.

Tropical living wouldn’t be complete without the feel of wood in the home, one common interpretation is a simple structure of bent wooden columns.  That draw the thatch roof and split bamboo ceiling close to the ground. Ultimately, however, Filipinos love a homey look, the do not see a house as a home if the roof is flat.
