WINDOW DRESSING

A window that is bare looks so lonely and unwanted. Many homeowners are not aware that the curtains have four functions, they provide privacy, decoration, light control and insulation.  This usually means that one curtain cannot do all four functions, depending on the location of your window and the type of your house.

Fine curtains, though decorative and ideal for light control do little to preserve privacy. Heavy drapes preferably floor to ceiling not only ensure privacy but insulate the room.

Blinds often are the alternative to the drapes that are sometimes so tedious to clean. Although Venetian blinds appear to be the most popular, they are not always the most appropriate.  The main disadvantage of blinds is that they are not good insulators although when closed in summer the do keep the sun out. And some heat. In winter, condensation on windows is a tell-tale sign that room is  being lost.

Most style and shape of windows can be curtained in a variety of ways. You can make a big window look narrower, and a narrow window seem wide. A squat one look elegant and a very elegant window toned down. A flattering but practical treatment is possible for even the most unorthodox shape.

Windows that are overlooked or have an unattractive view can be dressed with a net curtain or a thin fabric that can sheer the view and add character to the window. Large picture window or patio doors are usually where there is an attractive view a sheer cloth can both cover it from prying eyes but still keep the outside view visible.
